Louise Estes


We celebrate the life of Louise Estes, an accomplished artist who found much inspiration during her visits to the Gardens in the 1960s and 70s. Mrs. Estes' naturalistic watercolors of camellias, roses and other beautiful flowers are on display at Bellingrath and have also been exhibited at the National Arboretum (Washington, D.C.), the Arboretum at Cheekwood (Nashville), Callaway Gardens (Pine Mountain, Ga.) and many other galleries, as well as by organizations, including the Garden Writers of America, Men's Garden Club of America, the American Rose Society, and the American Camellia Society. Mrs. Estes passed away on September 28, 2017, at the age of 94. Now, more than ever, we feel fortunate to have so many examples of her artistry. https://bellingrath.org/louise-estes/

Introducing a new rose  'Clovie' that was hybridized by SWLA Rose Society member Steve Roussell.  This rose was previewed by Steve at the 2018 Gulf District Mid Winter Workshop in Lafayette.  It is a Hybrid Tea, Orange Pink, 4-5" blooms, 30-35 petals, very fragrant, medium upright growth, medium matt green foliage. ARS Gold Medal 2017   Transcript of Pat Shanley's presentation: The ARS Gold Honor Medal is the highest honor one can receive in the American Rose Society.  The recipient is chosen by the ARS Prizes & Award Committee.  The nominee must be a current member of the American Rose Society and have at least 12 years of service in ARS.  The nominee must have diligently worked on the National level, in any capacity, for the betterment of the American Rose Society and its membership.  The nominee must have done work of merit above and beyond the normal call of duty and devotion.  This year's honoree has spent the better part of her adult life in service to the Rose and the American Rose Society.  She has been a member of the American Rose Society since 1984 and is an ARS Life Member.  Since the early 1980's she has been actively involved on the Local, District and National levels.
